A pressure vest can make a real difference for an anxious dog — but only if it's introduced properly. The most common mistake is pulling it out for the first time during a thunderstorm, when your dog is already panicking. Do that and the vest becomes just another scary thing. A few minutes of prep in the days beforehand makes all the difference.
Why the introduction matters
The vest works through gentle, constant pressure — like a reassuring hug. For that to feel calming rather than alarming, your dog needs to associate it with normal, relaxed moments first. Rush it and even the best wrap won't help; take a few short sessions and most dogs accept it happily.
Step by step
- Let them sniff it first. Leave the vest near their bed for a day so it's just part of the furniture. Reward any calm interest with a treat.
- Drape, don't fasten. On a calm day, lay the vest over their back for a few seconds, treat, then remove. Keep it light and positive.
- Fasten for a minute, then reward. Once they're comfortable, do it up snugly (snug, not tight — you should fit two fingers underneath), give a treat, and take it off after a minute.
- Build up the time. Over a few sessions, extend how long they wear it while doing normal, pleasant things — a chew, a cuddle, dinner.
- Only then use it for stress. Once the vest feels completely normal, put it on before a known trigger — ideally 15–30 minutes ahead of fireworks, a storm, or a car trip — not in the middle of the panic.
Getting the fit right
A calming vest should be snug but not restrictive — firm enough to apply gentle pressure, loose enough to slide two fingers under and let your dog move and breathe freely. Measure your dog's chest (the widest point behind the front legs) and neck before ordering, and if you're between sizes, size up. Check the size guide on the Calm Wrap Vest page.
A few extra tips
- Pair it with other calming steps — close the curtains, play soft background noise, and give them a safe space like a den-style bed.
- Don't leave it on 24/7. Use it for stressful events and take it off in between so the effect stays meaningful.
- Stay calm yourself. Put the vest on matter-of-factly — no big fuss — so your dog reads it as no big deal.
- Use it beyond storms. The same pre-emptive pressure helps at the vet — pop it on before an appointment and pair it with the advice in our guide to making vet visits less scary.
Give it a fair go
Some dogs relax the very first time; others need a few exposures before you see the benefit. Introduce it calmly, get the fit right, and use it ahead of triggers rather than during them — that's how a pressure vest does its best work. And if it turns out not to be right for your dog, our 30-day returns have you covered.
